How often do we have puppies?

At McHan Cairns, we rarely have 2 litters a year; and most often have one at the most due to personal constraints/time limitations.  Only AKC champion dogs and bitches are bred together.  Most of our litters range from 1-5 puppies.

Do we keep a waiting list?

No, waiting lists are generally not kept, as we have found over the years that most people are not willing to wait for puppies.  Those persons who might be considered as possible homes are those which express an interest and keep in contact, understanding that we may or may not have a puppy that suits them.

How long are puppies kept?

Puppies are kept for at least 12 weeks, and often longer, to assess their potential and to consider possible homes.  As we strive for "show quality" pups to improve the breed, we will often keep puppies up to 6 months to how they progress and mature.  However, companion puppies are occasionally available, and have all the same care and attention lavished up on them, as do their littermates.

Why don't we have puppies available all the time?

Both myself and Diana work full time, have families and other obligations; Cairns are our passion, NOT a business.

Are the sire and dam health tested?

Yes, both the sire and dam are tested for GCL and are CERF'd before they are bred.  Often the sire resides elsewhere, often in another state, but the above tests must be completed before we will consider adding the animal to our breeding program.  All brood bitches are tested also.  Both mother and pups receive routine vet care before and after the pregnancy to insure a healthy pup.

Can you help with grooming?

Yes, we are happy to help with grooming, and can often refer you to breeders or handlers who can groom your dog for you.  However, we encourage all owners to learn to trim their own dogs and provide a grooming booklet created by the Cairn Terrier Club of America (CTCA) for the new owner.

If you plan to show your dog, and have never done so, it is usually best to engage the services of a professional handler to assist you in grooming and showing your dog.
